Military Road - Or the Main Cliff Road, as it is known today, was opened to the public in 1930, and in this photograph we can see it being surfaced. At one time the whole cliff was common land, where farmers kept donkeys, sheep and other hardy animals to graze on furze, an ideal refuge for finches and pheasants.
