LADY ERNESTINE – had a major advantage over the Parsons owned screw steamers and that was that the ease with which she could put her stern on the mud. With a plank over the stern and laid over the mud she could embark passengers from Anderton and Foss Point while on certain tides. Parsons steamers were restricted to Southdown, at the mouth of the lake. In this photograph the gounding is self inflicted, a full compliment of passengers have embarked while the Paddler is resting on the mud. Using the 20/30 ft long Quant Poles, the crew were able to free the vessel as required for the journey to Devonport.
